Sutton Coldfield Town 'gutted' to miss out on play-offs by a single goal
SUTTON Coldfield Town were left “absolutely devastated’’ after missing out on the Zamaretto Midlands play-offs by a single goal for the second season running.
On an afternoon of twists and turns, Chris Keogh’s men claimed a 2-0 win at Beaconsfield but Slough Town snatched an injury-time goal to seal a 4-1 victory at Sutton’s ground-sharers Romulus to grab fifth spot on goal difference.
Sutton were +32, Slough were +33.
“We are absolutely devastated,” said Royals assistant boss Neil Tooth. “To miss out on the play-offs by a single goal two years in a row is harsh.
“We changed positions with Slough seven times during the afternoon – Sky Sports would have loved it!”
Sutton dominated at Beaconsfield but had to wait until the second half to get the breakthrough.
Jamille Matt stabbed home from a corner on the hour and Matt Dodd doubled the lead on 71 minutes.
Slough had moved 3-0 ahead at Roms with goals from Mo Sharif, Adam Martin and Paul Edgeworth.
Roms’ former Sutton striker Mykel Beckley reduced the deficit with nine minutes to play and at that stage Sutton held fifth spot. But with seconds left, Elliott Buchanan hit the visitors’ play-off-clinching fourth.
Stuart Hendrie completed Atherstone Town’s fightback with an 89th-minute equaliser after they had trailed Chesham 3-1 at half-time. Brazilian striker Richard Da Silva and Luke Keen also netted for the Adders.
Bromsgrove Rovers slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Rothwell.
