MICKY Moore insisted there were no excuses after Solihull Moors’ remarkable unbeaten league record was ended by Alfreton Town last night.
Having equalled Southport’s record 18-match league run at the weekend, last night proved a game too far for Moors against the Blue Square Bet North title favourites, who claimed a 2-0 win.
Assistant manager Moore said: “The better team won on the night. I’ve got no complaints.
“We had a couple of players who had only been 50-50 because of knocks but we risked them. The difference was that Alfreton could make four or five changes because they have got the bigger budget to carry a bigger squad.
“It ends the unbeaten run but we will dust ourselves down and go again against Guiseley on Saturday.”
It was Solihull’s first league defeat since losing to Nuneaton on November 9 but it might have been different at the Impact Arena had Moors striker Matt Smith’s header not been saved with the score at 0-0.
But Josh Law opened the scoring for Alfreton on 19 minutes with a header and then doubled the lead four minutes into the second half. He was brought down by keeper Jas Singh to earn a penalty and slotted home the spot-kick to put Alfreton on top of the table on goal difference from AFC Telford United.
Sutton Coldfield Town extended their unbeaten run to eight matches but had to settle for a point in their derby clash against Romulus.
The 1-1 draw allowed the Royals to edge a point clear in fifth place in the Evo-Stik Division One South table before the rest of the midweek fixtures.
Mark Bellingham gave Sutton the lead at Coles Lane on nine minutes when he headed home.
But the Roms, determined to bounce back after slipping to four defeats in the last five matches, restored parity on the strike of half-time through Marcus Brown.
There were few chances in the second half as both teams cancelled each other out and neither goalkeeper was called into notable action.
The sides’ next meeting – on the final day of the season – is likely to be more dramatic.
