CARL Burley wants Causeway United’s record-breaking efforts to provide the platform to create history again next season.
The Causeway boss says it is a sign of how strong the Midland Alliance has been that a top-ten spot is their likely outcome, despite setting club bests for the most points, most wins and most goals this term.
On Tuesday, they chalked up a sixth win in seven matches after humbling title-chasers and FA Vase finalists Coalville Town 3-1 in one of their best results of the season.
Having admitted he had feared a relegation battle earlier in the season after losing key players from his squad, Burley says there is plenty to build on.
“Having got to 71 points with four games left, in any other season we would expect to be in the top six,” he said.
“We’ve broken the club records for most points, most wins and most goals but it looks like we are not going to beat the record for our highest position of sixth. We are probably looking at eighth.
“If you look at the season in the Alliance it’s been really strange.
‘‘We are tenth, 20 points behind the leaders Tipton Town, but then the gap between us and Rocester in 14th place is 27 points. There are lot of good teams in the league.”
Causeway look to complete a rapid double on Saturday when they head to Heath Hayes, having beaten them 4-0 a week ago.
One big plus for Causeway is that striker Stuart How is getting fitter after starting his first match in eight months following a serious knee injury. He also netted in last week’s win against Friar Lane.
Elsewhere, Coleshill Town will entertain Kirby Muxloe on Saturday while Highgate United are also on home soil when they play Coventry Sphinx.
Alvechurch travel to Loughborough University.
