Sutton Coldfield Town hope for record-breaking finale

CHRIS Keogh has challenged his Sutton Coldfield Town players to put their names into folklore by targeting a league and cup double.

The Royals have already rewritten the club’s record books after sealing a place in the Birmingham Senior Cup final for the first time after adding Blues to their list of giant-killings.

They will now meet holders Nuneaton Town – most likely at the Triton Arena on May 7 – in the final.

But fifth-placed Sutton want to extend their league season too – and they know wins against Spalding United today at Coles Lane and then against old foes Romulus on Monday will guarantee a top-five place in the Evo-Stik Division One South.

After missing out on goal difference in the last two seasons in the Zamaretto Midlands, Keogh knows they need to seize their chance.

“After Brigg lost in midweek, it’s back in our own hands,” said Keogh. “Two wins and we can’t be caught.

“I always felt it would go to the last game – and you could have written the script that we would play our ground-sharers, friends and rivals Romulus in the last game. I said before the cup semi-final that we faced the biggest fortnight in the club’s recent history and the players have got the chance to make names for themselves.”

Ed Booth did that on Tuesday night with the winner to defeat Blues 3-2 in the county cup semi after Mark Bellingham had twice hauled Sutton level.

Stuart McNaught, who was cup-tied, can return for today’s match at home to basement side Spalding, but Craig Milligan starts a two-game ban. Bellingham and Matt Jackson (both hamstring) face fitness tests.
