SOLIHULL Moors striker Matt Smith is set to complete a remarkable season by winning an England call-up.
The giant forward, who was playing at Stourport Swifts last season, has been named in the England C squad for next month’s final of the International Challenge Trophy.
Smith is among a 40-strong initial squad, which also includes Kidderminster Harriers’ trio Jack Byrne, Matty Blair and Lee Vaughan, to face Portugal on May 19.
He only joined Moors in February from Redditch United and has netted 12 times.
Having also scored nine for Redditch and one for Droylsden, he is the second-highest goalscorer in the Blue Square Bet North.
Moors manager Micky Moore said: “It is a fantastic honour for Matt and it’s great for the club.
“It’s a dream for any footballer to play for their country, at whatever level.”
Former Moors skipper Theo Streete, who has helped Alfreton Town win the Blue Square Bet North title, has also been included, as well as ex-Chasetown forward Reece Styche, now at Forest Green Rovers, and former Kidderminster defender Paul Bignot, now at Newport County, and Luton Town’s ex-Harrier Matthew Barnes-Homer.
England manager Paul Fairclough will whittle down the squad to 16 by May 12.
The final will be played at Rushden & Diamonds’ Nene Park HQ.
Portugal are set to include ex-Bolton striker Ricardo Vaz Te and Benfica’s Fabio Contrao, who played in the 2010 World Cup.
Fairclough said: “Whatever happens, it is a great education for these players.
“To grow as a footballer you have to play against the elite teams and experience their different styles and patterns.”
