A SIGN that rugby’s fixtures computer has not lost its sense of humour will come from deepest Cornwall tomorrow as Alex Davidson makes his comeback to the Birmingham & Solihull side.
The dynamic second row will start for Bees in their EDF Energy National Trophy fourth-round clash with Launceston, against opponents who derailed one of the best seasons in his career.
Davidson was in the form of his life when he was both sent off and injured the last time the sides met – in a league match last October – and has not played since.
While Russell Earnshaw’s side managed to hold out with 14 men for a quarter of the match, the lock watched from the sidelines having been sent off for stamping and also nursing a broken hand.
He served his three-week ban but that injury, the form of other players and the winter freeze, has delayed his return to action until this weekend.
However, Earnshaw knows that Davidson will have to be at his best and on his best behaviour.
“He has got to be careful,” the head coach admitted. “They will look at our team and see if they can get him to react again. He plays his rugby on the edge but he must not tip beyond that. To be fair it was the only incident since I have been at the club that he’s been involved in. It was a shame because he was playing as well as ever.”
Davidson will partner Andy Daish, who has not played all season, in the second row.
Daish, last year’s leading scorer, is coming back from shoulder surgery as Earnshaw assesses his options for the crucial league run-in.
Ben Phillips will captain the side while former Moseley wing James Aston comes in for his first appearance in three months.
