Llandovery 15 Birmingham & Solihull bees 14
TWO second-half tries from Dan Sanderson were not enough to bring much-needed relief for Bees in a surprisingly competitive British & Irish Cup clash.
The Damson Park outfit, still licking their wounds from Friday’s 52-0 mauling at Bedford, looked to have launched a successful comeback when they led 14-10 on the final play.
But a last-gasp try from Huw Grundy snatched the win for a Llandovery side that featured five debutants and several triallists.
Indeed, the Welsh Premiership outfit had swept into a 10-0 lead and had drawn Bees into a bunfight before the classy Sanderson imposed himself on proceedings.
The dual-registered lock, who was plucked from obscurity by Northampton at the end of last season, ploughed over in the 55th and 67th minutes and looked to have given Bees a hard-fought victory.
But when they needed to see the game out the visitors lost possession in their own half and paid dearly.
A sweeping counter-attack saw Grundy power through Jimmy Williams to go over in the corner.
It was a fitting end to a good match in which it took every one of the first 40 minutes to set the scoreboard ticking – and it was the hosts who did that.
