Moseley in need of winning formula

AND then there were four. Last week five clubs were browsing in the basement of National One.

Newbury though found their way to the escalator and headed off to the ground floor courtesy of their 22-17 victory over Moseley at Billesley Common at the weekend.

That leaves Nottingham, Moseley, Waterloo - promoted with the Red and Blacks last season - and Sedgley Park still with points in single figures watching a gap develop between them and the relative safety of mid-table.

Losses by Coventry, who went down 29-13 at Doncaster, and London Welsh, 24-30 home losers to Exeter, means that the gap did not grow any wider.

But unless Moseley find some wins from somewhere they are in danger of becoming embroiled in a very ugly dog-fight at the bottom of the pile as the season progresses.

Next week they face rock-bottom Sedgley Park at Billesley and, as well as needing an injection of points themselves, Moseley cannot afford to give a team without a win the confidence boost of a victory to kick-start their season.

To their credit, Moseley have been collecting bonus points, four in the last four games, the equivalent of a win, which is keeping the scoreboard tick-ing over.

Coach Ian Smith though is still of the opinion it is far too early in the season to be reading too much into the league table.

"You can pick up three or four wins suddenly any time in the season and catapult yourself to mid-table or mid-table to top," he said.
