Moseley RFC: Championship survival marks season of underachievement

AS happy as he was with his side securing Championship safety with a game to spare, Ryan De La Harpe admits Moseley’s season will go down as one of underachievement.

The scrum-half has been one of Moseley’s stars in their play-off campaign with three tries and a couple of highly promising individual displays.

The latest of those came at Damson Park last Sunday when the Namibian made and scored the try that gave the visitors’ breathing space to close out a 23-14 victory over Bees.

But given the talent in Ian Smith’s squad De La Harpe believes Mose’s second-tier status should not have been jeopardised.

“It was a long season but I think we are better than second bottom,” he claimed.

“When we are in the mood to play I feel we can take on anyone. I think we could have done a lot better.

“But it comes back to us pitching up and seeing what happens or coming to play, that’s the difference.

“That’s why we haven’t been consistent enough – we need that mental edge and to be ready every time. One day we are happy, the next day we are nervous. We need to be consistent because you have to be happy where you work.”

Mose showed both sides of their character on Sunday.

“It was just a bit frustrating in the first half,’’ said De La Harpe.

‘‘I sensed a bit of nervousness but as the game went on our confidence grew because we know what we can do and what they were capable of doing.”
