Stour's super season

WHATEVER happens tomorrow, this will have been a memorable season for Stourbridge.

President Ian Cole said: "If someone had offered us the chance to still have a mathematical chance of promotion going into the last game at the start of the season we would have taken it.

"Our best position before this was seventh and we are guaranteed third place."

Stour, five points adrift in third spot, need to beat Southend at Stourton Park and also score at least four tries and they need second placed Manchester to lose at Blackheath without gaining even a losing bonus point.

That scenario would put the Black Country side level on points and they would take the second promotion spot on games won.

Blackheath were in the promotion mix themselves for three-quarters of the season but seem to have gone off the boil in the latest results.

That does not auger well for Stour, who would be hoping for a last hurrah from Blackheath before their home fans to end the season on a high.

They went down 47-0 at leaders Otley last time out and only managed to beat bottom club Halifax, who have been poor all season, by 20-17 the previous week.

Coles said: "We will be going for five points. "We just have to keep the pressure up on Manchester but no matter what happens it has been a great season, Stour's best ever by some distance."
