Birmingham League Division One: Old Hill top after overcoming stubborn Wombourne

Old Hill top the table after a close-fought battle with newly-promoted Wombourne.

The two-wicket victory puts Old Hill seven points clear of second-placed Bromsgove.

Wombourne were skittled out for 131, Elliot Wilson (four for 34) causing the bulk of the damage for Old Hill.

But a decent bowling display from Adam Quiney (five for 34) ensured Old Hill have to fight all the way to chalk up their second win of the season.

A patient half-century from Chris Bending (51) helped the league leaders’ cause.

Ash Newdick (62), Worcestershire batsman Alexei Kervezee (50) and Jayden Levitt (41) took Bromsgrove to the heights of 260 for nine against former Premier Division outfit Leamington Spa.

The South Warwickshire outfit had reached 197 for seven when the allotted overs ran out.

Brockhampton smashed 272 for six against Attock, with Adam Hewlett (84) and Ben Stebbings (51) in the runs.

But an unbeaten 103 from Jhangir Khan took the Birmingham club to 224 for five by the close.

Dorridge’s decision to declare after 50 overs with their score on 275 for eight went unrewarded as Coventry & NW finished on 254 for eight after 60 overs.

David Ball (109) and Abdul Hafeez (90) were the main men for Dorridge but Zohaib Akhlaque (100) and Stuart Hopkins (47) helped Coventry see off the threat of a defeat despite their opponents’ bold move.

Third-placed Shifnal were indebted to David Powles’ 65 for their 168 for nine.

It looked as though his efforts would result in a win when Stratford-upon-Avon slipped to 54 for five.

However, a mature 60 from former Warwickshire Academy all-rounder Junead Zaman spared Stratford’s blushes and helped steer his side to a four-wicket win.

West Bromwich Dartmouth overpowered bottom-placed Halesowen by 144 runs after Scotland international Navdeep Poonia (118) and Ruki De Silva (44) took their much fancied team to 274 for eight declared in 54 overs.

After tea, winless Halesowen collapsed to 130 all out as Imran Khan finished with four for 27.
