O’Neill to face facts on top six place next season for Aston Villa

MARTIN O’Neill says Villa will have to face a reality check that the top six will be tough to crack next season.

The Villa boss has taken his side from 16th to 11th to sixth and to a likely fifth finish in his three seasons in charge.

But Villa possess nowhere near the riches of those around them in a demanding league which has seen three established clubs and big spenders from the North East struggle for survival this season.

“Manchester City and Tottenham look to be very strong next season. Breaking into the top six will be hard,” said the Villa boss.

“You can imagine Everton with a cup final to look forward to and maybe getting a bit of renewed strength.

‘‘And who is to say that whatever might happen in the North East you always think that those sides, with phenomenal support, if they avoid the drop this season will take that as a real scare and get stronger again.

“It is exciting, but it is very difficult.”

“Relentless” is how Hull manager Phil Brown summed up the league last month. “It’s in your face, it’s non-stop, it’s merciless, it doesn’t give you time to think.” said Brown who brings his side to Villa Park on Monday, and O’Neill is in agreement.
