Carson: Playing ugly could be a winning formula for West Brom

Scott Carson

“It will take a Middlesbrough-esque performance – it will take that and even more to beat them. Every game we’ve played until Palace has been the kind where we’ve not really been knocked about.

“On Saturday and Tuesday a few players got ruffled up, opposition players put tackles in and we have to do the same and if that means winning nastily, like other teams are doing, then we need to do the same.

“We can’t go around thinking we’re going to beat teams 5-0 like we did to Middlesbrough. Sometimes you need to take a one-nil and scruffy goal.”

Carson said he was hopeful that they had not lost too much ground in their quest for promotion, not least as Middlesbrough and Preston lost on Tuesday, while Newcastle drew at home the following night.

“We have 20 points from ten games so it’s not the end of the world but we have to treat it as a wake-up call,” he added.

“The teams we’ve played before Barnsley and Palace had allowed us to play football but the last couple of teams have given us a kick up the backside and maybe made us realise that we’re not going to get our own way every single game.”
