“We play quite narrow as a midfield and we have got to adapt to the role the manager asks us to.

“It’s quite difficult as a striker to burst forward and then get back in there.

“But we’re capable of doing that, and I felt we did quite well at Liverpool, up until the second half when we maybe could have kept possession a little bit better as a pairing up front.

“As a team we had to soak up a lot of pressure.

‘‘We couldn’t really get out as much as we did in the first half.

“Nevertheless, we did put a shift in for the boys and worked hard, which you have got to do.”

Benitez’s headed goal, his first for the club, came as a relief to the Ecuadorian, said Jerome.

“It was nice for Chucho to get off the mark. That will do his confidence some good. He’s been really unlucky the last couple of games.

“He’s come close, he’s hit the post a few times, it’s not happened for him,” he added.

“But now that goal will have done him the world of good and he can take it into the next few games and we can continue to build our partnership. I think the understanding is there.”
