MARTIN O’Neill has called on Villa to use last season’s Old Trafford turmoil as their inspiration when they attempt to end their 26-year wait for an away win over Manchester United tomorrow.
Villa have failed to beat United on opposition territory since Peter Withe scored a brace during a 2-1 victory in November 1983 but came as close as ever to finally ending that sequence in April.
O’Neill’s men led 2-1 with ten minutes remaining in last season’s corresponding fixture only to concede two late goals as Sir Alex Ferguson’s champions picked up a vital win en-route to the title.
And the Villa boss is hoping for a repeat performance, if not result, when his Champions League chasers aim to continue this season’s impressive record against the Premier League’s Big Four.
“I couldn’t have asked for anything more from the performance there last year,” said O’Neill.
