Luke Young is urging Aston Villa to attack Manchester United at Old Trafford

Luke Young

“Hopefully we can go out there, play our own game and have a go at them.”

Young has vivid memories of April’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, not least because he was caught out for Federico Macheda’s last-gasp winner.

“Trust it to be one of those iconic goals that’s going to be played over and over again,” said Young.

“It probably won them the league and there I am getting turned for it.

“It’s one of those things. It was late in the game. It won’t be the last time I get turned for a goal.”

Young is excited that Villa will again adopt a positive approach, even if the system can leave the defence a little exposed at times.

He added: “We try to win games of football. We don’t go to Old Trafford and say ‘for the first 15-20 minutes let’s try to nullify them’.

“I don’t think it would suit us to go anywhere and sit back with the attacking players we’ve got. We’ll be playing as attacking as we ever do and trying to win a game of football.

“That’s the worry as a defender a little bit. You practically have three wingers playing in the midfield and Stan anchoring it.

“Hopefully we can get some kind of balance there because if we are a little bit too gung-ho we can get picked off by the top, top sides.

Young expects defensive colleague Richard Dunne to be able to handle the banter coming his way from the home fans because of his Manchester City allegiances.

“Dunney’s big enough though to deal with that,” added Young.

“It’s not the first time he’d have got a bit of stick.

“Having played for Everton as well as Manchester City he’ll have played in some derbies.”
