Aston Villa boosted by Gabby Agbonlahor's injury news

Gabriel Agbonlahor

VILLA are optimistic that Gabby Agbonlahor’s groin operation will only rule him out of today’s trip to Tottenham, according to the new club doctor.

Agbonlahor has been booked in for surgery on Monday after struggling with the problem since his substitute appearance in the win at Wolves.

Club doctor Duncan Robertson insists it is a routine procedure to heal the condition known as Gilmore’s groin which is common in footballers.

Agbonlahor’s operation means he will miss England’s next Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro at Wembley a week on Tuesday.

It is hoped the Brummie will recover for Villa’s match against Chelsea at Villa Park a fortnight today – or the trip to Sunderland a week later.

“Gabby has a very focal groin pain,” said Dr Robertson, who has replaced Roddy MacDonald following his move to Celtic during the summer.

“One of his little ligaments is inflamed and causing problems when he sprints, kicks and runs.

“I saw the surgeon at the beginning of the week in Leicester and we agreed that it is not going to go away without a very small operation – and that’s one we do through the camera.

“Hopefully the best case scenario is he will be back for Chelsea, if not we would like to think the game afterwards.

“It’s a very common operation, lot of players have it and the recovery is very quick.

“He didn’t have this problem two or three months ago, I think it’s just one of those things that some footballers run into.

“There’s no obvious cause, it’s just common in footballers. It’s no big deal, it should be a quick fix. It’s called Gilmore’s groin.”
