Birmingham City is in safe hands - Michael Wiseman

Carson Yeung

MICHAEL Wiseman, uniquely placed to pass judgment on the Carson Yeung regime one year on, reckons Blues are in safe hands.

Wiseman was kept on at the club by Yeung after his £81.5 million takeover and made vice-president.

His involvement on the St Andrew’s board follows a long family tradition with his father, Jack, and grandfather, David, who were both former chairmen

Wiseman was also part of the David Sullivan-Gold brothers-Karren Brady set-up, and was a major point of contact for Yeung and Co when they first appeared on the scene, in the summer of 2007.

Yeung’s first 12 months at the helm have been eventful.

Alex McLeish’s side finished ninth in the Premier League, a 51-year best, and set other playing records.

There were vitriolic legal battles with the former owners (who settled after Yeung served a High Court writ), a ground-breaking tour to Hong Kong and China and only yesterday Peter Pannu revealed to the Birmingham Mail that plans for either a new ground or the redevelopment of St Andrew’s were gathering speed.

Michael Dunford came and went, Sammy Yu quit and other highlights included around £22 million spent on fees and attempts to break the club transfer record with moves for Roman Pavlyuchenko and Charles N’Zogbia.

But Wiseman said it was also the little things that mattered and gave him confidence for the next year – and beyond.

“I’m certain the club is in safe hands,” he said. “Obviously not speaking the language, I don’t know everything.

“But they do tell me a lot and it’s just the little things that have been done in the last year.
