Garry O'Connor is back in the frame but still unsure of Birmingham City future

Garry O'Connor

GARRY O’Connor today admitted he was still none the wiser whether he would be a Blues player after Christmas.

O’Connor signed a six-month deal in the summer because of an injury-plagued 2009-10.

He had surgery on both hips and it was decided not to take up a two-year option but negotiate a short-term agreement to assess his condition.

O’Connor started only his second league game this season for Blues on Saturday after being farmed out to Barnsley to secure regular match action.

He could be involved again tonight in the Carling Cup fourth-round tie at home to Brentford (7.45pm), although Alex McLeish is set to ring the changes.

O’Connor, naturally, said he was keen to figure in as many matches as possible to help his cause.

“There’s nothing been said at the moment about a contract,” he told the Birmingham Mail. “I have just got to keep my head down and work hard.

“The gaffer has got faith in me. It’s just about the people upstairs.

“If it doesn’t happen for me here, I can move on happy with my form at the moment.

“But I would love to stay at Blues. It’s a fantastic club and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it here. Hopefully I can continue here.”

O’Connor revealed he was keen for the Oakwell loan, even though it was something of a gamble potentially being out of sight, out of mind.

“That was something I wanted. I don’t think the gaffer wanted me to do it, but I just tried to push him forward to play games and to get back in the fold,’’ he added.

“I think it was a successful time out there. I got 90 minutes under my belt, came back here and tried to get back into the team.

“Unfortunately, Cameron Jerome has been injured so I got a game against Blackpool and hopefully I can keep doing that.

“As you could see, I got into the right positions. It was just that final little touch which failed me.

“Hopefully in other games I can be more clinical. I’m just happy to be in the team and hopefully I can stay in there and just improve with the games.”
