Nikola Zigic goes gunning for Aston Villa - and Birmingham City hero status

Nikola Zigic

NIKOLA Zigic has admitted he would love to write his name into Blues’ folklore by becoming a derby-day hero.

The giant striker is set to make his Villa-Blues fixture debut at Villa Park on Sunday.

And Zigic said he would respect Blues’ Second City rivals but try to beat them – and make a lasting impression.

“Of course I do know what it would mean if I could score and help the team win,” he said.

“It’s like every derby the world over. It’s a normal situation.

‘‘I remember my days when I was playing in the Belgrade derby, it’s exactly the same thing. So if you do score, especially a winner, you are a hero for life. It is something I am well aware of.”

Zigic continued: “Obviously I have heard of the Birmingham City-Aston Villa rivalry. I have actually seen a couple of games on TV.

“I am looking forward to it. I really don’t want to talk about the opposition.

‘‘I don’t think that’s right and I don’t want to get involved in any anti-Aston Villa campaign.

“It should be, as it always is here, a big derby and I am really looking forward to playing in it.”

Blues don’t need reminding that Villa have won the last six meetings but Zigic said that counted for nothing.

“With a derby game, you never know what the result is going to be,’’ he added.
