Aston Villa: Gary McAllister on Barry Bannan's Scotland debut

Barry Bannan

GARY McAllister’s illustrious playing days left him with a cabinet full of medals – but one day he will never forget was his international debut.

The former Scotland star went on to win 57 caps for his country and also wore the captain’s armband for the majority of his international career.

Barry Bannan, a player Macca has taken under his wing since arriving at Villa Park, made his Scotland bow in the 3-0 friendly win over the Faroe Islands last night.

And although McAllister admits it was not the most glamorous of games to pick up his first cap, it will be one that will stay in Bannan’s memory for a long time to come.

“It’s as proud a moment as you can get,” the assistant manager said. “Lots of people ask you when you win things ‘when is your best bit’.

“Winning your first cap for your country, no matter who it’s against, with loads of family there and friends, is a proud, proud moment.
