Birmingham City: Jordon Mutch ready to make Blues breakthrough

JORDON Mutch is ready to make his big breakthrough at Birmingham City.

Both the midfielder and his mentor Academy supremo Terry Westley believe the time is nigh.

And Westley says that despite plenty of ‘nonsense’ talked about the midfielder’s future, he wants to stay at Blues and make his name at St Andrew’s.

Mutch is set to figure for Blues in today’s FA Cup third round tie at Millwall after his loan Watford ended.

The 19-year-old England youth star is out of contract in the summer, but Blues are moving to tie him down on a new deal.

"I think you now have to look at what stage Jordon is at," says Westley, who was instrumental in nabbing Mutch from Derby County, where he was Academy chief for five years.

"It goes back to recovery from injury [Mutch was out for a year due to fractures in both feet], going on loan to Hereford and really doing well, enough so that Doncaster wanted to take him last year, as a second year scholar.

"After playing in the Championship, it was then this season deciding Watford was the best place to go. They put him straight in the team, he’s played every minute of every game.

"He’s scored seven goals in 27 starting appearances, which is a good return.

"It’s given him day to day match experiences of trying to win games, learning how to win games, sometimes seeing a game through by not losing possession of the ball, being too clever, which you get in reserve football or youth football.

"He’s had to be disciplined about his role within Watford’s team and learn that also sometimes they go long.

"He’s had to learn the nasty side of the business, if you like. And that loan spell has allowed him to do that. So he’s ready now to have a challenge here.
