THE arrival of Sebastien Bassong should go a little way to appeasing the doubters, according to chief executive Jez Moxey.
The former Newcastle defender’s arrival, on a 15-game loan, was completed just before the deadline and the 25-year-old Cameroon centre-back is in line for a debut at QPR.
Moxey used his programme notes for the Liverpool game to launch a staunch defence of the club’s summer spending. They brought in Roger Johnson and Dorus de Vries as well making Jamie O’Hara’s loan signing permanent. Moxey believes the club deserved more credit.
“I would simply urge everyone to keep a sense of perspective about the Club’s progression and its evolution recently,” Moxey said.
“Results have not been as good as we would have liked this season but, contrary to what some fans say, we signed two expensive players in the summer, not one!”
Bassong’s arrival made it three in January, with four senior players moving out: Adlene Guedioura (loan to Nottm Forest), Andy Keogh (Millwall), Sam Vokes (loan Brighton) and Matt Doherty (loan Hibs). Moxey said the club’s long term future has to be remain paramount, ruling out paying “absolutely crazy transfer fees and even crazier wages”.
“Some clubs are prepared to do that but they risk their very existence. Portsmouth exemplify this point. We have invested properly in this team and we need the team to perform as well as they can.”
