Birmingham City: Chris Hughton on Blues loan plans

CHRIS Hughton has insisted that any new players at Birmingham City could not upset the ‘tight’ squad he has moulded at St Andrew’s.

The boss confirmed he was after up to three players in the loan market, with a striker the priority.

He also admitted he was keen to cover the gaps left by the sales of Jean Beausejour and Liam Ridgewell, but that the flexibility of his charges could also be useful in that respect.

Above all, Hughton said it was important that the good thing Blues have got going presently was not disrupted.

He felt the right-calibre players would still be available from February 8, when loans can again be arranged, and that Blues hadn’t missed the boat in January.

“I am conscious to say that we’re not looking to bring a lot of players in,” said Hughton, whose side face Southampton in a crunch Championship match at St Andrew’s tomorrow.

“We have a tight squad. I prefer to keep it that way.

“But we do know that at some stage if we were able to pick up two or three injuries, it would make us even tighter.

“We need to make sure that anyone coming in, they would also be the right player for us.

“Certainly, it would be a maximum of three new players. Sometimes that can change, because in any period you can get those injuries. But no more than three.
