Karlsson on the verge

Robert Karlsson was waiting to be crowned as the European Tour's new number one on Sunday afternoon as Lee Westwood fell out of contention for the Volvo Masters at Valderrama.

Needing to win and lying joint second with a round to go, Westwood bogeyed the seventh and eighth and dropped from three behind to seven adrift when Dane Soren Kjeldsen birdied the 11th and 12th.

On 10 under Kjeldsen was two ahead of German Martin Kaymer and five clear of Sergio Garcia and Anthony Wall. Westwood was joint fifth with six to play.

Earlier Padraig Harrington, second on the money list entering the final event, had scuppered his chances with a double bogey on the 16th in his rain-delayed third round.

He required first or second place in the tournament, but finished on two over. Karlsson was down on nine over, but it appeared not to matter in the race for the Harry Vardon Trophy.
