Swann on song
Graeme Swann claimed two wickets in his first over in Test cricket to build on the momentum built by a stubborn lower-order batting display in the opening Test against India.
The 29-year-old Nottinghamshire off-spinner removed dangerous opener Gautam Gambhir and former captain Rahul Dravid as India struggled to 37 for three at tea on the second day.
Earlier, the hosts had been frustrated before finally dismissing England for 316 shortly after lunch.
Swann, given his debut following an injury to Stuart Broad, did not make the most impressive of starts with his first delivery being cut forcefully for four by Gambhir.
But he recovered quickly to win an lbw against Gambhir offering no shot two balls later, and claimed another lbw against Dravid to finish the over and put England firmly on top at the interval.
James Anderson had earlier claimed the wicket of Virender Sehwag with the home side on 16.
His superb first over helped ease England's worries about the fitness of main spearhead Steve Harmison, who left the field after just four overs complaining of a sore right knee, and although he returned before the interval he was still limping in the outfield.
England had resumed on 229 for five and had hoped all-rounder Andrew Flintoff could guide them to a competitive first-innings score, only to lose him in the third over of the day when the former captain guided leg-spinner Amit Mishra to short leg off his pad.
It was the breakthrough India wanted when they resumed overnight, but they encountered unexpected resistance with Matt Prior teaming up with nightwatchman Anderson in a 42-run stand.
Anderson was eventually dismissed by Mishra for 19, but Prior (53 not out) was still there at the end.
