England struggle to build lead

England suffered a major setback in their attempt to build a match-winning lead in the opening Test when they lost two key wickets in the space of six deliveries.

Having already established a 75-run first innings lead by dismissing India for 241 shortly after lunch on the third day, the tourists were hoping for a steady start second time round.

But after reaching 28 without loss in nine overs, England's comfortable progress was interrupted by the loss of Alastair Cook, Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen as they slumped to 43 for three - before recovering to reach 67 without further loss at tea.

Neither of England's openers had looked particularly troubled during the early stages of their reply, particularly with seamer Ishant Sharma having no-ball troubles.

He finally found the right line and length in his fifth over, however, when Cook edged behind to a full-length delivery which seamed away.

The momentum firmly swung back in their favour three overs later with leg-spinner Amit Mishra claiming his first victim, continuing Bell's worrying loss of form when he spun a ball out of the footmarks and the Warwickshire batsman was caught at short-leg.

Just five balls later, captain Pietersen became England's third victim when he was given lbw to Yuvraj Singh's first delivery for one.

Andrew Strauss was then fortunate to be missed by MS Dhoni behind the stumps, after edging Mishra.
