India closing in on victory

Sachin Tendulkar was leading India towards victory in the opening Test today after England struggled to make inroads on a tense final day.

India's master batsman hit an unbeaten 65 to help his side move within 83 runs of reaching their victory target of 387, which would be the fourth highest successful run chase in Test history and the highest ever fourth-innings total at the Chepauk Stadium.

Tendulkar used his vast experience and composure to guide India through a tense first two sessions and reach 303 for four at tea, despite losing wickets at the start of each session to lift England's hopes of going ahead in the two-match series.
