Gerrard inspires Magpies thumping

Steven Gerrard led the way as rampant Liverpool trounced Newcastle 5-1 to cement their lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League table.

The Reds captain opened the scoring on 31 minutes - and after Sami Hyypia and Ryan Babel had struck either side of half-time, he added a second with 66 minutes gone.

Defender David Edgar had pulled one back in first-half injury-time, but substitute Xavi Alonso made it 5-1 from the penalty spot with 14 minutes remaining.
