Bronze age for Bank duo

MARGARET Dignum and Mervyn Wood, both from the Astwood Bank club in Redditch, returned from the World Veteran Championships in Rio de Janeiro with bronze medals.
Dignum reached the last four in the over-65s ladies singles, with Wood partnering Fred Lockwood to a medal in the over-75s men’s doubles.
English players came back from the event with a total of seven medals.
Nabil Khalfey was on top form for Sutton B in their 7-3 victory over Smiths Wood B in the First Division of the Birmingham Summer League.
Leaders Colebridge A beat their B side 9-1.
Alasdhair Broadbent, Tony Carter and Alan Caffery won two each for Smiths Wood A in their 7-3 success at Sutton A.
Les Minott showed his best form for Bournville at West Midlands Police B in an 8-2 win in Division Two and Mike Cooper gained a maximum for Sutton C in a 7-3 victory over Smithereens.
Alan Baker, of Sutton D, had a sensational victory over the previously undefeated Jon Ludlow from leaders Beaufort Sports A, although this was the only defeat for Sports in a 9-1 success, thanks to Alan Thompson and Rob Sheldon.
Division Three top dogs Baverstock A beat their B side 10-0.
Streetly B just got the better of Smiths Wood C 6-4 as Shane Gales won three and teamed up with Jordan Colen for a doubles victory.
Newcomers Monarch continue to improve in Division Four, as a 6-4 win over Sutton G showed.
Steve Wright gained a maximum for the second week in succession for the winners.
