Panthers pipped to the post

BIRMINGHAM Panthers put on a gallant show as the city's franchise returned to the NIA for one game only.

But they were pipped to the honours by Worcester Wolves 91-95 in the BBL Trophy group clash.

Despite their lack of depth and height, Panthers found their shooting touch and refused to let Wolves run away with it.

Daniel Sandell top-scored with 28 points, including six three-pointers, and LaTaryl Williams contributed 21 and Lekan Popoola 19.

Panthers trailed 41-52 in the second period but rattled off 10 straight points, including a last-gasp steal and dunk by LaTaryl Williams to make it 51-52 at the break.

Panthers again fought back, at the end of the third period, to make it 72-73.

With two minutes left, Panthers were 85-88 down and Wolves held them off with a flurry of free-throws.

James Life led all scorers with 34 points and then promptly won the Molten Three-Point Shootout competition, part of the entertainment on BBL Cup final day.

As for the main event, ex-Birmingham Bullet Kevin Griffin (24 points, five three-pointers) was named MVP for Milton Keynes Lions as they defeated Newcastle Eagles 69-66.
