Brummies' Correy bid is blocked

BAFFLED Brummies boss Graham Drury has seen his bid to sign ex-Wolverhampton ace Ronnie Correy blocked by the sport's governing body.

Drury had pinpointed Correy as the man to replace the injured Henning Bager for the final month of the season, with Birmingham set to embark on a busy final few weeks of the campaign in the Young Shield.

The veteran Californian had agreed terms and was due to be unveiled before Wednesday night's Second City Trophy meeting at Perry Barr.

But the BSPA management committee put a stop to the move because, in their opinion, it was "not in the best interests of the sport".

Drury said: "The criteria for signing Ronnie was exactly the same as when we signed Phil Morris earlier this month, so I can't understand the logic. There has to be some other reason.

"I'm disappointed, but it pales into insignificance compared to how Ronnie is feeling. He has been denied the opportunity to earn some income during October.

"He's got a young family and when I approached him to ride for us he was highly delighted. You can imagine his reaction when I told him the news."

The Brummies will now see out the rest of the season using rider replacement for broken wrist victim Bager.
