Chris Kerr to stay in United States during summer

CHRIS Kerr will stay at home in California this summer after failing to find a team place in British Speedway.

Kerr had his most successful season in Birmingham colours last year and was hoping to race in both the Elite and Premier Leagues this season under the doubling-up rule.

But he insists he hasn’t turned his back on the sport and will take his place in the USA World Cup squad at their qualifier later this year.

He said: “I guess my average worked against me in the end. Speedway is all about numbers and after speaking with a few promoters none of them could fit me into their plans.

“I was really up for it this season and wanted to have another solid season and hopefully injury free.”

Kerr has taken on a full-time job back in America but will take time off to represent his country in Landshut, Germany, in the World Cup qualifying round.

He said: “It will be a hard meeting against the hosts and Finland but I think the guys can do it and progress to the next round.

“I plan on going over to help the guys qualify and try and get the United States name back among the world’s elite once more.

“I would like to thank my sponsors for all the support they have given me and all the fans who have supported my career over the past few years and although those fans won’t see me on British soil in 2011 they certainly haven’t seen the last of Chris Kerr.”

Kerr’s 2010 campaign was interrupted by a broken leg, which also hit Birmingham’s chances of silverware as he was such a key rider.

The 2011 Brummies will be on track for the first time next Thursday, March 10, at the club’s pre-season practice session from midday onwards.
