Speedway: Birmingham Brummies support worthy cause

BIRMINGHAM will have three riders in action this weekend in support of a worthy cause.

The Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund raises vital cash for past and present riders who suffer from injury and Scunthorpe are hosting the hugely popular ‘Ben Fund Bonanza’ on Saturday (2.30).

Brummies trio Krzysztof Kasprzak, James Wright and Ben Barker are all included in the line-up for a meeting which traditionally pulls in a big crowd.

Birmingham boss Graham Drury said: “I’m very pleased to see three of our riders supporting this very worthwhile event.

“They’ve had big crowds at Sheffield and Rye House in the last couple of years and it raises valuable funds for the cause. Even to this day, riders who are still paying the price for their injuries from when I was riding 30-years ago are still benefiting from the fund.

“Injuries are part and parcel of this wonderful sport so I believe the Ben Fund Bonanza is a great way for the season to start. I hope some of our fans can go along and support it.”

Meanwhile, top-level talks are taking place over the next 48-hours in a bid to resolve the winter-long dispute between Elite League champions Coventry, Peterborough and the sport’s governing body.

Both clubs are currently out of the top flight after they walked out of the British Speedway Promoters’ Association AGM last November.

A bitter legal dispute has followed in a dreadful winter for the sport but the clubs and promoters will make one last effort to get both clubs back on track before the weekend.

The Elite League currently has eight clubs but the prospect of 10 is something which the sport’s major backer, Sky Sports, are supporting.

However, the future of both clubs hangs in the balance as a result of the bitter feud which has dominated the closed season.
