Boxing: The former Birmingham City midfielder preparing to take on a boxing Bluenose fan
THE verbals have already started between avid Bluenose Frankie Gavin and former Blues midfielder Curtis Woodhouse before their title fight at the LG Arena.
Angry Gavin told me: “He was a medium footballer and I am going to prove he is an average boxer. He has shown me nothing but disrespect and I am going to knock him out.
“I went to see him last Friday night against Stefy Bull knowing that if he won I would be facing him in Birmingham on September 18.
“Before that fight he bad-mouthed me saying he would do all sorts of things to me. That he didn’t rate me and that he would knock me out.
“I have never bad-mouthed an opponent. I don’t believe in it.
“I have respect for every boxer who climbs into the ring. But I am not standing for this.
“I will give him respect as I knock him out. Where I am planning to reach in my career I have to beat people like him on the way. I will.
“He has improved as a boxer but I saw nothing in his win over Bull to cause me any concern. He has a decent punch but he wasn’t strong enough to put Bull on the deck.
“I will be too fast and too powerful for him. He will not survive my power punching.
“The fact he is a former Birmingham player who I watched several times will make no difference. He couldn’t make the grade in the first team and he is going to learn what it’s like to be a loser as a boxer.’’
The crunch battle is just one of nine titles at stake on the Frank Warren promotion – the most spectacular show he has ever staged.
At a press conference today he was set to announce details of the matches he has arranged, which will include Birmingham’s Matthew Macklin challenging to regain the European middleweight belt against Darren Barker (reported exclusively in Friday’s Birmingham Mail) and ex-stablemate Don Broadhurst returning to the ring and going for the English super flyweight title.
The spectacular also includes Welshman Nathan Cleverly defending his Interim WBO light heavyweight title. Derek Chisora defends his British heavyweight crown against Sam Sexton.
James DeGale makes the first defence of his WBA International super middleweight crown.
It doesn’t get any better than that!
