Famous five set for £1,000 open day prize chase

FIVE Warwickshire and Worcestershire players are through to finals day at the Meole Brace Open in Shrewsbury.

Anthony Bracken, Richard Dandy, Pete Davenport, Darren Wood and Nigel Townsend will all be chasing the £1,000 first prize on April 6.

The Tipton and Coseley Building Society Open qualifiers are Graeme Wilson, Len Robinson, Keith Anderson, James Seville, Gary Ellis, Phil Brown, Mike Tunstall and Dean Ferris.

The Tony Pagett Open qualifiers are Pete Williams, Ross Dunkley, Pete Dunkley, Pete Homer. The final is on Sunday with an 11am start.

JOHN Palmer beat Matt Higgins 21/7 to win the Brookhill Sunday singles.

Dave and Trevor Bate collected the £100 first prize as the Stourbridge Labour Indoor Pairs League champions.

DMBEC 'C' are the Cookley Indoor League Division One champions, with Cradley Heath Libs winning Division Two.

FOURTEEN members of the W&W Senior County Championship side will be chasing the £500 first prize in the Nationwide Access Ltd-sponsored Beaufort Classic on Saturday (10.30am start).

Top northern players Graeme Wilson and Gary Ellis will be taking part in the George BC invitation doubles (start 5.30pm)).

Sunday W&W outfit George will meet Tongue from Whitfield in their opening clash in the British Team Championships at Irlam. Greville are out after beating Brighouse by seven, but then losing by 40 to Budenburg.

THE W&W junior county trials will take place at King George V on Sunday April 13 (10.30am) and Forget Me Not BC on Sunday April 20 (10.30am). For the first time female players are eligible and all players must have been under 18 on January 1 of this year.

LEN Mole, of Tanworth-in-Arden BC, became treasurer of his club in 1963 and has been a committee member for 50 years and never missed a meeting.

He took over the job as groundsman 22 years ago and has been in the job ever since.

Len is the only club captain Tanworth have ever had, and has been the instigator of many fundraising events for charities the club have supported over the years.

He is well known in the Heart of England Friendly Bowls League where he was recently featured in their excellent newsletter.

For all his hard work and support to others on the local bowls scene he has been honoured by the WWCBA as a life vice-president.
