UNIVERSITY Sport Birmingham's Jon Harford bowed out of the British Open in Liverpool when he lost to sixth-seeded Frenchman Thierry Lincou in the first round.

Harford, who had battled his way through qualifying, went down in straight games 11-10, 11-5, 11-3.

Birmingham team-mate Joey Barrington was also beaten, losing 9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 3-11, 11-7 to Finland's 14th seed Ollie Tuominen.

Warwickshire's Emma Beddoes went out in the final stage of women's qualifying and local hopes now rest with Birmingham University's Laura Lengthorn-Massaro, who meets seventh seed and former Edgbaston Priory player Vicky Botwright in the first round.
