Finals Day at Berkswell and Balsall Common tennis club

THE spirits at Berkswell and Balsall Common tennis club on finals day weren’t dampened by the wet weather last Sunday – even if some of the players were.
The ladies 90+ endured the worst of the conditions, with Anne Hollway, Katie Standley, Hilary Brattle and Sally Webber playing through the morning’s torrential rain. Katie and Anne won in two sets 6-3, 6-2..
The men’s 90+ finalists were not so brave and took cover in the indoor courts at Warwick University. It proved a good move for Graham Hollway and Chris Barker who won 7-5, 6-3, against Ivor Bowen and John Walsh.
The ‘teen’s and has-beens’ category was a close fought three-set match with Sue Walsh and Joanne Brattle coming out top beating Sally Bell and Emma Thomas 6-1, 6-7, 6-4.
As the wet conditions eased for the afternoon play, both men’s and ladies singles finals went to three sets – and the BBQ was lit!
David Green triumphed against Ivor Bowen 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Louise Baker beat Katie Standley 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The Ladies First Team of Katie Standley, Louise Baker, Lucie Ray and Sue Walsh, came up against each other in the ladies doubles final, with Katie Standley and Louise Baker winning in three sets
4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Graham Hollway and Chris Barker clinched their second victory of the day beating father and son pairing, Ivor and Lee Bowen, 6-4,
6-4 in the men’s doubles.
The sun put in a brief appearance for the last match of the day - the mixed doubles. Anne Hollway and Colin Grafton played Katie Standley and Lee Bowen, taking the match in two sets 7-5, 6-3. (Pictured left to right Colin Grafton, Anne Hollway, Katie Standley and Lee Bowen).
