Jack High - Bowls, with Mike Wakelam

CARL Fielding had lost in the final stages of three big competitions this season and his bad luck continued when he was beaten in the semi-final of the Midland Masters.

The Kings Heath Park player won his opening game 21/16 against Oliver Chard and followed that with a 21/15 success against local hope Glyn Wellings.

In the last 16 he had a 21/19 win over another Shropshire bowler, Colin Beaman, before a 21/6 romp in the last eight against Stuart Smith.

In the semi-final Fielding lost 21/20 to Gary Owen who, in turn, was beaten 21/15 in the final by his brother Andrew.

WARWICKSHIRE Ladies failed in their bid to win the BLCBA Senior County Championships for the first time when they lost to Shropshire by 19.

They were never in front, although both sides had 12 winners. Best for Warwickshire were Maliza Herbert (21/9), Susanne Green (21/10), Chris Price (21/11), Michelle Chatwin (21/13) and Kirsty Darling (21/14).

THE W&W Premier Division One title will be decided on the last match of the season after leaders George won at Moseley by 24 and second-placed Boldmere beat Great Barr by 125.

THERE were near misses for local players in big events at Blackpool.

Maliza Herbert lost in the quarter-final of the ladies Waterloo, Carl Fielding was beaten at the same stage in the men’s Waterloo and Paul Bailey lost in the final of the Marton Open.

MOSELEY were beaten by 17 in the final of the Midlands Super Cup by Potteries outfit Middleport Park.

Banbury BC defeated Forget Me Not to take the John Butt Trophy in the Birmingham Sunday League.

W&W and BCGBA Junior Champion Gregg Smith, 15, could not have been given a tougher draw for Saturday’s BCGBA Champion of Champions event at the Waterloo Hotel Blackpool.

Smith, from the Gate BC Oldbury, faces Yorkshire’s Graeme Wilson, winner of the title in 2003 and runner-up last year.

W&W Senior County Champion Darren Round, from Acocks Green Legion, clashes with top Cumbrian bowler Ian Nicholson.
