Urban Athletic and Yardley Ex Services in Senior Cup victories

URBAN Athletic and Yardley Ex Services both pulled off shock Senior Cup victories.

Division One Resolution and previously unbeaten Division Four outfit Elmdon Heath were the notable first-round victims.

Urban, who linger at the bottom of Division Four, came from a goal down to beat Resolution 2-1 thanks to goals from Jama and Ibrar Ajmal. An Adam Whitehouse strike was all it took for Division Six side Yardley Ex-Services to see off Elmdon.

Elsewhere, several Premier Division sides progressed without too much danger. Aston FC beat Ajax 3-2 – Hamood Salim, a Marcus Malcolm header and an Abdul Hoque penalty for the victors – while Sutton United ended Crusaders’ unbeaten run with a 1-0 victory, thanks to a James Coughlan strike.

Reigning Premier Division champions Shirley Athletic came through a seven-goal thriller with a youthful St Pauls, the current Division Three leaders.

Both sides traded goals before the referee overruled an offside call from his linesman to allow Adam Johnson to score a controversial 93rd-minute winner for Shirley.

Old Nortonians beat Birch Coppice Bullets 1-0, Somers defeated Acocks Green 3-1, Aston Labs won 3-1 at home to Bentley Heath and Cresconians saw off West Hagley 2-1.
