Warwickshire LTA promote grassroots tennis with summer-long initiative

WARWICKSHIRE LTA are working to improve the levels of grassroots participation with a summer-long initiative offering tennis for just £1.

A whole sequence of events are running at clubs across Birmingham, including Hall Green, Kings Heath, Billesley Indoor and Springfield tennis clubs, and in Cotteridge Park, Hamstead Hall Community Learning Centre, Pype Hayes and Cannon Hill parks.

First Girls Only Fun Tennis is aimed at Year Seven and Eight players and includes Cardio Tennis, keeping fit hitting tennis balls to music, and all sessions are led by a qualified LTA coach.

Organisers are also offering Mini Tennis for kids under ten with equipment suitable for various sizes and abilities, be it on the smaller red and orange courts or using a less bouncy green ball.

“If children haven’t played before this is the perfect introduction,” said organiser Jayne Ashton.

For details and timings of the various schemes log on to the News Section on the Warwickshire LTA website.

“There is very little that you could do for £1 and many will be surprised how affordable tennis can be,” Ashton said.

“With the women’s AEGON Classic coming to Birmingham in early June all the groups taking part can visit the event and have a go on the Highland Spring Hotshot Zone as well.”

n THE deadline for entries for the Men’s Doubles Open tournament at Beechwood Tennis Club is Friday, April 30.

The event runs from 9.30am on Sunday, May 2 and costs £20 to enter but also includes prize money and a barbecue lunch.
