Beechwood player Cameron Malik wins Warwickshire Club Players Championship
Oct 5 2010 by Brian Dick, Birmingham Mail
CAMERON Malik has claimed the Warwickshire Club Players Championship at the first time of asking.
The Beechwood player faced fellow newcomer Stu Maidment on finals day at the Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre and although the 6-3, 6-1 scoreline suggested a one-sided contest, the reality was anything but.
Sutton Coldfield’s Maidment battled hard but found the county No.9 just too hot to handle on the day.
Nineteen-year-old Malik proved his double bagel victory over James Cooper in the semi-finals had been no fluke.
For the second year running the Ladies Singles title was taken by Olton & West Warwicks’ Lisa Key who beat Solihull Arden’s Hannah Lunn in straight sets.
However, there was consolation for Lunn who went on to win the Ladies Doubles with her partner Lisa Wilkes.
The Arden pair had to come from a set down to defeat Alison Isaacs and Judy Turner of Knowle & Dorridge.
Turner could also console herself with victory in a different section after she partnered Jean Badman to claim the Ladies Veterans Doubles.
The K&D pairing defeated Alana Parsons and Kath Brown of Solihull Arden 6-2, 6-3.
Parsons and Brown then went on to win the Ladies Vintage Doubles for the fourth year in succession with a win over Kenilworth’s Kay Gebbels & Caroline Rhodes.
Blossomfield’s Andy Clifford also won one and lost one of his finals.
First he fell short in the Mens Vintage Doubles to David Bradbury and Paul Callender of Leamington but he took the Mixed Veteran Doubles with Alice Davy.
