EDGBASTON Priory member Luke Hammond’s remarkable season continued when he claimed a double victory at the AEGON British Junior National Championships.
The Birmingham youngster, who attends Millfield School in Somerset, dominated at the West Hants Tennis Club in Bournemouth, where he won both the Under-12 singles and doubles championships.
His success comes just two months after he achieved the same feat at the National Clay Court Championships in Queenswood.
Once again he was victorious over adversary Thomas Wright, the player he defeated in June, this time by the more comfortable scoreline of 6-3, 6-4.
”It was a good match for me – I am delighted with how I played,” Hammond said.
“I played the game how I wanted to and it worked well. There was a little bit of pressure being the No.1 seed but I was fine with that.”
And just as they did at Queenswood the pair also teamed up to challenge for the Under-12 boys doubles national title.
Once more they were successful, this time with a 6-0, 6-2 thrashing of Will Davis and Joe Tyler.
The AEGON British Junior National Championships is the national level junior tournament and has seen past champions include the current men’s and women’s British No.1, Andy Murray and Elena Baltacha.
Which means Hammond beat the best players in his age group, including Sam Gough, Nicholas Brookes, James Caddies and Tiran Sanghera.
There were also superb results for players based at Priory’s High Performance Centre.
Seventeen-year-old Lloyd Glasspool, from Woodrush, reached the quarter-finals of the Under-18s singles.
The GB international defeated Benjamin Mullis and Jack Findel-Hawkins en route, before losing to Luke Johnson.
And Emily Smith reached the final of the Under-12 girls event where she fell at the final hurdle against seventh seed Anna Brogan.
However, she eliminated Lidia Burrows, Emily Arbuthnott, qualifier Savannah Sills and fifth seed Millie Stretton in an outstanding run.
Solihull Arden’s bright hopes for the Boys Under-14 title both fell to third seed and beaten finalist George Hedley.
First, Mason Recci went out in the second round to be followed by club-mate Luke Oakley in the semis.
