Foreign stars put our lads in shade with skills
I AM not so sure about whether the coaching is better abroad but foreign players seem to have better technique and ability.
The flood of foreign lads who have come into our game have adapted to the way the Premier League is played.
The standards, even from the time I was playing, have gone up so high because it is so, so much quicker and that is down to the number of foreigners.
Our lads seem to be able to cope in the Premier League but when you are up against the best 11 players from a different country their technique and ability always seems to be higher than ours.
The foreign lads come over and are able to adapt very easily to our systems and that must be because of their coaching systems. They are very talented players and that is why most Premier League clubs head to other countries to buy players.
Not enough young lads come through because the coaching, or perhaps I should say technique, is better abroad.
I don’t know if they’re taught to look three moves ahead but when a ball comes to a player like Torres, Berbatov or Ronaldo they seem to know instinctively where to lay it off and where to move.
I should not lump all our players in together but if you look at those in the Premier League you would actually pay to go and see, a lot of them would be foreign.
The real top players are the ones people want to see. Stevie Gerrard is proably one of the best players in England. He is another Roy Keane for me.
Roy was not going to do a Ryan Giggs and go past seven people and put the ball in the back of the net but he was one of the best players to ever play the game in England.
He was very steady. Stevie is very similar. He will get you goals when you need them, he will drive through, he is a very traditional English fighter.
He does not have all the skills and stuff but he is like Keane or Bryan Robson, who would go through a brick wall for you.
Every game Liverpool have played so far this season, you watch Gerrard and you think ‘that is a footballer’.
The tackles he makes and bringing Liverpool back from the brink at times, he is magnificent but the players who really excite, the ones with all the tricks that you want to go and see ... a lot of them are the foreign boys.
