Tottenham's Harry Redknapp denies any transfer wrongdoing

Harry Redknapp has defended Tottenham's transfer conduct ahead of a crucial week in their relegation battle where they face two teams upset by them during the January window.

Spurs boss Redknapp wanted Stewart Downing to give his midfield balance but the left winger stayed at Middlesbrough and is set to feature at White Hart Lane tomorrow.

Boro were upset by the manner of Spurs' approach and there was also bad blood with Sunderland when Redknapp targeted Trinidad and Tobago striker Kenwyne Jones. Redknapp in turn accused Sunderland of unsettling Darren Bent.

Although Boro were desperately trying to keep hold of Downing, Redknapp feels other clubs were willing to sell players to Spurs.

"Other people encouraged offers," he said.

Spurs travel to face Sunderland on Saturday after their request to move the match was turned down, meaning it will be the sixth game in 17 days for Redknapp.
