Tottenham's Aaron Lennon aims for England

Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon is determined to help his club challenge for Europe this season and return to the England squad in the process.

The 21-year-old has been out of the national team for two years but put himself in the frame for a call-up to Fabio Capello's squad after the Italian watched him this week in the Carling Cup final and the Barclays Premier League win over Middlesbrough.

England face Slovakia in a friendly at the end of the month and then Ukraine in a World Cup qualifier on April 1.

"I haven't been there for a while now, I've missed it and if I could get back in then brilliant but it's about keeping Spurs in the league right now," Lennon said.

Lennon's two goals against Boro took them to 13th in the table and they could be in the top half if they win their game in hand at the weekend when they travel to Sunderland.

That would put them five points behind seventh place, which would be enough for the Europa League if a top-six team wins the FA Cup in May.

"We know we shouldn't be in this position with the players we have at the club," Lennon added. "It's just a pity the way we started, it killed us really.

"But there are still 10 games to go and we could still kick on. If we could get seventh it would be unbelievable but the main thing is to keep in the league."

On a personal level, Lennon feels he is in better form than when he was taken to the 2006 World Cup by Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Robbie Keane, who returned to Spurs in January after six months at Liverpool, said: "Since I got back I see a more mature player. He's only going to get better with age.

"I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be in (the England squad); I think he should be in there anyway because you haven't got a player who is like him."

Lennon was suggested as a possible makeweight in the deal that brought Keane back to White Hart Lane - but he has been a regular under Spurs boss Harry Redknapp and stayed at the club.

Redknapp feels the winger is improving his final ball and is learning the game.
