Arsenal vow to spend cash carefully after Adebayor quits
Arsene Wenger finally pocketed the £25million cheque for the sale of Emmanuel Adebayor - but he won't be pushed into spending it.
Though Arsenal fans will be clamouring once more for the Gunners boss to prise open his purse, Wenger may well keep them frustrated.
Speaking after this gentle, cobweb-clearer against League Two Barnet, Wenger was asked whether he would be spending the money from Adebayor's sale to Manchester City that went through last night.
He said: "We have replacements already with the likes of Robin van Persie, Andrey Arshavin, Eduardo, Theo Walcott and Niclas Bendtner.
"We are not in a hurry. We just want to prepare for the season and we will see if we need to add something."
Striker Wenger did admit that he is interested in Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh. He added: "If we need a striker, he is one we could go for. He is one we will keep an eye on."
Arsenal embark on a 10-day trip to Austria now and Wenger said: "We had 14 players we didn't use for this game and they will all be involved."
He seems to be challenging the players he has to show he doesn't need to buy.
On Adebayor's departure - welcomed by many Arsenal fans - Wenger said: "We've lost a great player and we wish him well.
"I don't believe last season playing a part in my mind. There was a little resentment that you could feel last summer. But he will do well at City."
As ever, Wenger will not be panicked into a spending spree. He said: "Football has not been hit by the recession but it could easily happen. In the next eight months clubs could suffer much more than people think."
