Arsenal star reveals his defensive strategy for the season
Much is expected of Wenger's young guns in 2010, following another campaign which promised so much, yet once more failed to deliver come May.
"I have read some papers and seen the pressure for Arsenal to win a trophy this season," said Vermaelen.
"We have a lot of talented players and some great young ones too, so it is a good group and I hope we will do well."
With talks continuing over defender Philippe Senderos' move to Everton, it had been suggested Wenger would swoop for another defender before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.
However, Fulham centre-back Brede Hangeland has committed himself to Craven Cottage, where he has already played in Europe this season.
With the Champions League qualifier against Celtic fast approaching, Wenger could now step up his interest in Borussia Dortmund's Serbian international Neven Subotic, although only at the right price.
Such differences in valuation with Bordeaux over Marouane Chamakh appears to leave a move for the Morocco striker deadlocked, with West Ham said to be ready to step in, while a firm bid to bring former captain Patrick Vieira back to Arsenal now appears unlikely.
Arsenal have also been linked with Crystal Palace youngster Victor Moses, but Wenger's immediate attentions will focused on just how many of his globetrotting internationals return match fit.
Wingers Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) and Samir Nasri (broken leg) have both already been ruled out for the opening few weeks of the season.
Striker Eduardo, just back in proper contention following the best part of a year on the sidelines, scored in Croatia's World Cup qualifying win in Belarus.
Forwards Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott were both involved in the 2-2 draw between Holland and England in Amsterdam, while teenager Jack Wilshere made his debut for the Under-21s on Tuesday night.
Nearly all of the first-team squad have been away this week, with Andrey Arshavin representing Russia, Emmanuel Eboue in Tunisia for Ivory Coast and the jet-setting Carlos Vela came off the bench as Mexico beat the United States.
Wenger confirmed he expected Vermaelen to feature at Everton, but that Walcott, on the bench in Amsterdam last night, would need some more recovery time from a slight back problem.
The Gunners boss, however, revealed number two keeper Lukasz Fabianski is set for a spell on the sidelines after needing knee surgery, while defender Johan Djourou is also out.
"We have some problems," Wenger told Arsenal TV Online.
"We have Theo Walcott, who is not available. [Abou] Diaby has a little groin problem, but he could be available.
"[Also] we have lost Johan Djourou and Lukasz Fabianski because they had injuries.
"Lukasz had a cartilage surgery. He will be out for two months.
"Johan has a knee problem that will take some time to cure - one month.
"Thomas Vermaelen played 45 minutes for Belgium last night and came through okay so he will be available."
Wenger feels both Rosicky and Nasri are rehabilitating well.
He said: "Tomas Rosicky is two weeks away," said Wenger.
"Samir Nasri [is out] three-and-a-half weeks now, but it will be six or seven weeks until he is available for training."
