Ex Tottenham star reveals his high hopes for Spurs

Former Tottenham midfielder Edgar Davids has hopes of Harry Redknapp's men going one better than his time at White Hart Lane by getting the club into the Champions League.

Davids was in the 2006 team that just missed out on fourth place in the Premier League when a mystery virus hit the squad ahead of the final match of the season, with Arsenal famously pipping them to the qualifier in Europe's top club competition.

Spurs have started well in the current campaign and Sunday's heavy defeat of Wigan put them back in the top four and raised hopes of them remaining there in May.

Davids, who is judging the UK Final of Red Bull Street Style 2009, said: "We are always rooting for that and I hope for them that they finally get the fourth spot.

"I think it's going to be a hard and long run and will be decided in the final games. I just hope that it isn't the last game, like when I was there.

"They started very well but it's not a sprint, it's a marathon and we'll have to see what they do in the second half of the season.

"I was back at the training ground recently and Harry was really relaxed and very nice. He didn't invite me back but when I am in London I go back to say hi to the boys and check up on them."

Despite the disappointment of missing out on the Champions League three years ago, Davids is happy that he fulfilled the club's targets when they signed him from Inter Milan the previous summer.

The 36-year-old, who has not played competitive football for 18 months and is looking to maintain his fitness by training with an English club, said: "I remember the West Ham game. I liked that whole time there and I don't see a loss, just because we finished fifth.

"When they signed me they had one objective - European football. I delivered. They said European football and didn't even dream of Champions League but when you get close you want to take it on. It was the first time they qualified for Europe in years."
