MICHAEL Appleton believes Albion would be foolish to fall into the trap of only worrying about Robin Van Persie, pointing to several other potential ‘destroyers’ in the Arsenal team. The Baggies travel to the Emirates to take on a Gunners side who have won eight of their last ten games.
They will face Dutchman Van Persie, who has scored 28 goals in his last 28 outings and who has netted seven goals in his last three Premier League games, including a hat-trick against Chelsea last weekend.
But they will also be wary of the threat posed by the likes of Theo Walcott and Gervinho.
The Baggies were insipid against Liverpool in Saturday’s televised clash at The Hawthorns but their coaching staff plan to ensure no detail is left out when they go through their pre-match preparations before Saturday’s game. While Van Persie poses all the obvious risks, Baggies No.2 Appleton is not going to focus on just one player.
And he says Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson and Co should be fully briefed by the time they step out on to the pitch.
“They will have all the information they need to know about him, whether that’s us talking to the players or being shown numerous videos on Van Persie and Arsenal’s strengths as an attacking team,” said Appleton.
“From our point of view, defensively we have looked more solid.
“I think we got caught a few times against Liverpool and were naive.
“We tired to throw too many people forward instead where a better option might have been being more cautious in our approach instead of maybe going for one or two passes to get behind them, perhaps going for five or six passes and more build up play.
“We’ve defended crosses a lot better this year, we’ve been better on set-pieces too, we’ve defended counter-attacks better.
“It’s more of what we do in possession of the ball and that’s what we need to concentrate on this week, rather than being too concerned about what one player has done for one side.
